From the White River Conference Journal, 1901:
Rev. W.B. Roe was born in Tipton county, Tenn., and professed religion when a boy. He was fortunate in getting for his wife a daughter of the Rev. Thos. L. Boswell, D.D., of the Memphis Conference. He moved to Arkansas in 1894 and in November that year was admitted on trial in the White River Conference. He served acceptably Golden lake, Blytheville Boydsville and Paragould circuits, and had recently been appointed to the Lorado circuit. His designs were already layed for the year's work. He was engaged in repairing the parsonage when the bullet accidentally struck him that caused his death in Jan., 1901. It may be truthfully said "he fell at his post" and has exchanged the labors, trials and afflictions of an earthly life, for the glorious rest, and the unwithering joys of the life that is eternal. We commend the bereaved widow and fatherless children to the tender care of a loving Father in heaven.
From the Arkansas Methodist, 20 Feb 1901, p. 12
Roe--W.B. Roe was born in Tennessee August 23, 1860, died at his home on the Lorada Circuit January 15, 1901.
Bro. Roe came to this State in 1895, and joined the White River Conference at Helena. Since that time he has served several works. I have known him a long time; came to this State with him. He was a true, good man, strong and fearless, always ready to defend the Church that he loved. He was also a good preacher. I have been with him in meetings every year since we came to the State. I have seen a great many souls converted under his preaching. This seemed to be the great desire of his heart. He preached a fine sermon Christmas day, had one conversion--a man by the name of Canaday. He also preached a sermon the morning before he died, on the atonement. The White River Conference has lost another good man, and a good preacher. He leaves behind a wife and five children and an aged father and many good friends to mourn his loss. Our loss will certainly be his eternal gain. God has only said: "Come up higher, enter into the joy of thy Lord." He has fought a good fight, finished his course, and now sits down at the right hand of God to await our coming.
May we be submissive to the will of God, and remember that it is not all of life to live nor all of death to die. But far out beyond this veil of tears we have a home whose builder and maker is God, eternal in the heavens. There wife shall see husband and children shall see father, and friends shall see friends. There we shall be an unbroken family, to live forever with Him who said: "I will prepare a place for you, that where I am there ye may be also."
May God bless the wife and dear children in this sad hour, is the prayer of your servant.
Z.D. Lindsey.
