Rev. Alonzo McKelvey
The Rev. Alonzo McKelvey, son of the Rev. and Mrs. J.K.P. McKelvey, was born in Camden, Tennessee, September 11, 1872, and came to Arkansas with his parents when a small boy, settling in Greene county.
Brother McKelvey was converted in early life. He was married to Miss Vennie Smith November 5, 1893. To them were born three children, Mrs. Frank Minicht [sic], James Prentice, and Winnie Ellen, the latter two having preceded him in death.
Brother McKelvey was licensed to preach in 1904, and was ordained deacon by Bishop James Atkins in 1906. he was admitted into the White River Conference in 1906 and was ordained elder in the North Arkansas Conference in 1914. He served: Lorado, Colt, Wheatley, Cave City, Cotter, Green Forrest, Marshall, Bradford, Knoble, Saint Francis, and other charges. He gave his life to the work of the Church.
Funeral services were held in the First Methodist Church, Paragould, November 26, by Rev. E.B. Williams, Presiding Elder of the Paragould District, assisted by Rev. George W. Pyles and the Rev. Sam G. Watson. His body was laid to rest in the Paragould cemetery.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Vennie McKelvey of Beach Grove; one daughter, mrs. Frank Nimnicht of Lafe; two sisters, Mrs. John C. Brewer and Mrs. Deti Rowe [sic], both of Paragould; and four brothers, W.T. McKelvey, H.N. McKelvey, D.L. McKelvey, and Ray McKelvey, all of Paragould.
