RETIRED TEACHER, CHURCH, CIVIC WORKER DIES
Miss Nancy Willie Roe, retired Des Arc Elementary School teacher, died Saturday, Aug, 12, in a Little Rock hospital. She had been in the hospital four weeks following heart surgery.
Miss Roe, a native of Des Arc, was born Sept. 12, 1912, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert (Minnie) Roe. She was active in church, school and community activities until failing health forced her retirement about 1964.
She graduated from Des Arc High School in 1930 and started her teaching career in rural schools of the area. She taught for 32 years most of these in the Des Arc school. She received her degree in elementary education ten years after finishing high school through correspondence courses and attending summer school.
She served as secretary of the Des Arc Alumni Association from its inception in 1955 until 1976 when ill health forced her retirement from this activity. Her interest and faithful work and contact with the Des Arc High School graduates was influential in keeping the organization growing.
She became a member of the First Methodist Church of Des Arc in 1923 and served for many years as organist and pianist, Sunday School teacher and youth sponsor.
She was a member of the national Retired Teachers Association, Order of Eastern Star, and Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority.
Surviving are two brothers, Rev. Joe B. Roe of Shelton, Neb., and Louis Howard Roe of Irving, Tex.; three sisters, Mrs. Alma Jameson of Malvern, Mrs. Geraldine Cochran of Crawfordsville, Ind., and Mrs. Electa Smith of Fayetteville; 11 nieces and nephews and nine great-nieces and nephews.
Services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church with the pastor, Rev. Don Eubanks; her brother, Rev. Joe B. Roe, and her nephew, Rev. Larry Jameson, officiating. Burial was in Lakeside Cemetery by Caskey Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Raymond Carlock, Tom Fisher, Paul Siitonen, Bob Haytley, Bob Pankey, and Doyle Burleson.
